Bongo Bong and Je Ne T'aime Plus

Bongo Bong and Je Ne T’aime Plus were originally released by Manu Chao in 1998 on the album Clandestino. The songs blend reggae, Latin and French chanson influences, reflecting Chao’s multilingual and internationally oriented style.

Robbie Williams recorded a version combining elements of both tracks during the Rudebox era. His interpretation draws on the distinctive melodic hook of Bongo Bong and incorporates aspects of Je Ne T’aime Plus, reworking them within a contemporary electronic pop framework.

Rather than presenting a straightforward cover, Williams’ version adapts the structure and rhythm into a stylised, beat driven arrangement. The recording reflects the experimental and club influenced direction that characterised much of his mid 2000s output.

The connection between Williams’ interpretation and Chao’s originals highlights the eclectic range of influences underpinning the Rudebox period, during which he engaged more overtly with international and genre crossing material.
