Candy was released in October 2012 as the lead single from Take the Crown. Written by Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow, the track marked one of their first songwriting collaborations since Williams’ reunion with Take That.
Produced by Jacknife Lee, the song combines bright brass accents with a contemporary pop arrangement. Its upbeat tempo and polished production signalled a deliberate return to radio focused pop following Williams’ previous studio releases.
Lyrically, Candy portrays a flawed but sympathetic character, delivered with humour and theatrical flair. The playful narrative tone aligns with the extroverted spirit that has characterised many of Williams’ most commercially successful singles.
It’s a song about a girl who thinks she’s benevolent, but she’s not.Robbie Williams
The single debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Williams’ first UK number one single since 2004. It set the commercial tone for Take the Crown and reaffirmed his mainstream appeal in the early 2010s.
