Freedom was released in August 1996 as Robbie Williams’ debut solo single, following his departure from Take That. The song is a cover of George Michael’s 1990 hit, and marked Williams’ first official release as a solo artist.
Produced by Guy Chambers and Steve Power, the recording was accompanied by a music video featuring Williams performing with friends in a London nightclub setting. The single’s release was seen as a statement of intent, signalling his move away from his former group.
Musically, Freedom retains the melodic structure of the original while adopting a more guitar led pop arrangement. The choice of song was widely interpreted as reflective of Williams’ desire for independence at the start of his solo career.
I just wanted my freedom.Robbie Williams
The single reached the top five on the UK Singles Chart, establishing Williams as a viable solo act and laying the groundwork for his debut album Life Thru a Lens.
