I’ve Been Expecting You was released in October 1998 as Robbie Williams’ second studio album. It followed his debut Life Thru a Lens and consolidated his transition from boy band member to established solo artist.
The album was written largely in collaboration with Guy Chambers, whose songwriting partnership with Williams shaped much of his late 1990s output. It produced several successful singles, including Millennium, his first UK number one single, as well as No Regrets and She’s the One.
Musically, I’ve Been Expecting You blends guitar led pop with orchestral elements and reflective balladry. Lyrically, the record explores themes of ambition, insecurity and public perception, building on the confessional tone introduced on his debut.
I wanted to prove I could do it again.Robbie Williams
The album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and became one of the best selling albums of 1998 in the UK. Its success confirmed Williams’ status as a leading British solo artist at the end of the decade.
