Life Thru a Lens was released in September 1997 as Robbie Williams’ debut solo album, following his departure from Take That in 1995. The record marked the beginning of his solo career and introduced a more confessional songwriting style.
Written primarily with Guy Chambers and produced by Steve Power, the album initially received a muted commercial response. Its fortunes changed with the release of the fourth single, Angels, which became a defining track of Williams’ career and significantly boosted album sales.
Musically, Life Thru a Lens blends guitar led pop rock with introspective ballads. The lyrics address themes of self doubt, fame and personal reflection, setting the tone for much of Williams’ subsequent work.
I had everything to prove.Robbie Williams
The album went on to reach number one on the UK Albums Chart and became one of the best selling albums in the UK in the late 1990s. Its eventual success established Williams as a major solo artist in his own right.
