Rock DJ was released in July 2000 as the lead single from Sing When You’re Winning. Written by Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers, the track marked the start of a new album campaign at the height of his commercial success.
Produced by Steve Power, the song samples Barry White’s It’s Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next to Me and is driven by a prominent bass line and dance influenced rhythm. Its club oriented production signalled a more overtly rhythmic direction compared with some of Williams’ earlier singles.
Lyrically, Rock DJ adopts a playful and self aware tone, addressing attraction and showmanship. The accompanying music video, noted for its graphic choreography, generated significant media attention and won several awards.

The single reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and became one of the defining hits of 2000. It set the commercial pace for Sing When You’re Winning and remains one of Williams’ most recognisable songs.
