Rudebox was released in September 2006 as the lead single and title track from Rudebox. Written by Robbie Williams and produced with Soul Mekanik, the song signalled a pronounced stylistic shift towards electro and dance influences.
Built around a prominent sample of Manu Chao’s Bongo Bong, the track combines spoken word verses with a minimalist electronic groove. Its club oriented production and playful vocal delivery marked a departure from the guitar led pop rock of Williams’ earlier singles.
Lyrically, Rudebox adopts a tongue in cheek tone, referencing pop culture and nightlife. The stripped back beat and rhythmic focus underscored Williams’ willingness to experiment with different genres at this stage in his career.

The single reached the UK top five and generated significant media attention upon release. Its bold change in direction set the tone for the album that followed and remains one of the most divisive releases in Williams’ catalogue.
