About
2 Become 1 is a duet between Robbie Williams and Emma Bunton, released on Bunton’s 2019 album My Happy Place. The song is a new recording of the 1996 Spice Girls single, which was written by the group with Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard. Bunton’s album combined new material with updated versions of earlier pop songs, and her collaboration with Williams served as one of its principal tracks. The album was released on 12 April 2019 and reached number 11 on the UK Albums Chart.
Williams and Bunton had performed together previously at promotional events, including a Heart Radio concert in 2016, where they sang 2 Become 1 live for the first time. Their studio version retains the song’s original structure and tempo, with added acoustic instrumentation and softer production to reflect Bunton’s style. The two artists recorded their vocals separately, later combining them in post-production for the final mix.
During promotion for the album, Bunton stated that Williams was enthusiastic about taking part and agreed immediately when she approached him to record the duet. She described the process as straightforward and collaborative, noting that he remained in close contact throughout the recording period. The pair’s version of the song received regular airplay on adult contemporary radio stations following its release.
“He was brilliant and said yes straight away. He kept emailing to ask if there was anything else I needed him to do. Very professional, as always.”Emma Bunton
2 Become 1 is one of several duets on My Happy Place, and its inclusion underlines both artists’ shared connection to 1990s British pop and their continued popularity with mainstream audiences.
