About

A House Without a Mum is the second of two demo recordings sung by Robbie Williams for the original cast album of The Boy in the Dress, the 2019 musical written with Guy Chambers for the Royal Shakespeare Company. The track appears midway through the show, performed on stage by the characters Dennis and his father, and captures the mixture of humour and sadness that defines the story’s treatment of family life.

The song opens as a brisk, guitar-driven number in which Dennis and his dad celebrate the apparent freedom of domestic chaos: “Brush your teeth, comb your hair, there’s dirty dishes everywhere, who left those undies on the chair?” Beneath its comic energy lies a tender recognition of loss, as the lyric shifts towards longing for the absent mother. Williams’s demo reflects both moods, moving effortlessly between cheerful playfulness and quiet melancholy.

Musically, the number blends light pop rhythms with theatrical phrasing, echoing the wit and melodic sensibility of British family musicals such as Matilda. The change of tempo mid-song, from bouncy optimism to slow piano lament, underlines the emotional contrast between denial and grief. Critics of the Stratford production highlighted this sequence as one of the musical’s most affecting moments.

“It’s hard to write humour and heartache in the same song, but Robbie and Guy achieved it beautifully here.”Gregory Doran, Royal Shakespeare Company

Williams’s guide vocal, released with the soundtrack, offers an especially poignant reading, emphasising his empathy for the material and his instinct for character-driven storytelling. Like much of The Boy in the Dress, the song celebrates imperfection and resilience within family life, qualities central to Williams’s own songwriting identity.

Lyrics

Why are we complaining
Why are we so sad
Perhaps we won life's lottery
Two sons and a dad
Things really ain't that bad

Don't kick the ball when you're indoors
Who's filthy fingers are on the walls
Do your homework, do your chores
Brush your teeth, comb your hair
There's dirty dishes everywhere
Who left those undies on the chair

You don't hear these words so much no more
In a house without a
Fun, fun, fun and then more fun
More ice cream for everyone
You can come downstairs upon your bum
In a house without a

It's dad, dad, dad, son, son, son
More fun fun fun for everyone
It feels like life has just begun
In a house without a mum

Who's been hanging off the door
Wash your mouth out, who just swore
Can't you act more mature
We were born with a silver spoon
It's time to tidy up your room
Play something that's got a tune

You don't hear these words so much no more
In a house without a
Fun, fun, fun and then more fun
More ice cream for everyone
You can come downstairs upon your bum
In a house without a

It's dad, dad, dad, son, son, son
More fun fun fun for everyone
It feels like life has just begun
In a house without a mum
In a house without a mum
In a house without a mum

We're in a house without a mum
Does that hurt, is it sore
It just a favourite, just as you asked for
Your like three little boys but I love you all

You don't hear those words so much no more
It's not like it was before
In a house without a mum
Let me take you in my arms
Your not to old for me to kiss it better
I will love you always, always and forever

You don't hear those words so much no more
It's not like it was before
In a house without a mum

Fun fun fun and then more fun
So much fun that it isn't fun
There's a hole where there isn't one
In a house without a mum

Why are we complaining
Why are we so sad
Perhaps we missed life's lottery
Two sons and a dad
I think things are quite bad
