About
Written by Robbie Williams, Glenn Ballard and Billy Morrison, Coffee, Tea and Sympathy was released as a B-side to Something Beautiful in 2003 and later included on In and Out of Consciousness. A bittersweet apology to past lovers, it finds Williams reflecting on the casual relationships and emotional fallout of his 1990s fame. Musically, it pairs an infectious pop melody with confessional lyrics, producing one of his strongest and most beloved B-sides from the Escapology sessions.
Ballard, best known for his work with Alanis Morissette and Michael Jackson, co-wrote the song with Morrison, then part of Williams’ circle in Los Angeles. The track’s polished acoustic groove and melodic phrasing reflect Ballard’s pop craftsmanship, while Williams’ lyric brings an unmistakable streak of self-deprecating humour: “I will never really, I never really will forget you. I’m sorry dear, have I met you?”
It’s literally a letter from a f***boy, which is what I was in the nineties. I was breaking hearts while looking for Mrs. Williams — this was me saying sorry.Robbie Williams
Performed live at his 2016 Under the Radar concert to the delight of long-time fans, Coffee, Tea and Sympathy showcases Williams’ ability to mix charm and remorse with effortless melodic flair. With its witty wordplay and reflective tone, it stands as a testament to his knack for turning personal flaws into pop gold — a rueful, irresistibly catchy confession.
Lyrics
I'm still powerless
I found myself breaking the girl
The king is half undressed
She's not my saviour
I don't want your love
Don't take my seed
It's not your love that I need
You're in no danger caressing me
But you're talking to a man I'm not supposed to be
And the clothes remain the same
I fear to face the walk of shame
Been nice to know you
I'm soaking in the morning rain
Find my car forgot your name
Been nice to hold you
Don't feel small
When I don't call
If I could talk I'd tell you
If I ever did don't answer kid
I've only lies to sell you
I'll be your stranger
I don't want your love
If you're in need
It's not your love that I need
It's all behaviour seducing me
I'm a million miles away and she's too blind to see
And the clothes remain the same
I fear to face the walk of shame
Been nice to know you
I'm soaking in the morning rain
Find my car forgot your name
Been nice to hold you
Step on board the gravy train
Same old faces different names
You bet your life I will complain
Cause I'm a sensitive boy
The real McCoy
Don't wanna stick me on your bedpost
And I never really will forget you
I'm sorry dear have I met you
All that you take from me is coffee and tea and sympathy
And the clothes remain the same
I fear to face the walk of shame
Been nice to know you
I'm soaking in the morning rain
Find my car forgot your name
Been nice to hold you
I have my needs
I hope she leaves
All that you take from me is coffee and tea and sympathy
I have my needs
I hope she leaves
All that you take from me is coffee and tea and sympathy
And the clothes remain the same
I fear to face the walk of shame
Been nice to know you
I'm soaking in the morning rain
Find my car forgot your name
Been nice to hold you
