About
Eyes on the Highway appears on Under the Radar Vol. 2 and was written by Robbie Williams, Tim Metcalfe and Piers Baron, who also produced the track. It was first released on 1 August 2017 as an instant download for fans who pre-ordered the album. The song was inspired by Williams’ lifelong affection for the film Grease, imagining what might have happened to Danny and Sandy after their car soared into the sky at the movie’s end.
Williams explained that the track “is what I think happened next – the real next day, not Grease 2.” Its lyrics reference the film’s stars directly: “I wanna be John Travolta Jr, I wanna be Newton John.” The narrative follows the couple as they drive into the unknown, celebrating love, youth and defiance while hinting at the inevitable passage of time. The song’s refrain, “Keep your eyes on the highway,” becomes both a romantic and existential mantra.
Musically, Eyes on the Highway builds from a gentle opening into a sweeping pop-rock arrangement. Echoing drums and soaring guitars give it cinematic scope, while Williams’ emotive vocal performance adds depth and vulnerability. Critics noted the influence of 1980s power ballads, with its dynamic shifts and euphoric choruses reminiscent of Millennium and Love My Life.
“It’s about what happened after the car took off in Grease. I always wondered where they went next.”Robbie Williams
The song was accompanied by a lyric video created by Orly Brodey, depicting a classic convertible driving through sunlit American landscapes. It became a fan favourite and a highlight of the Under the Radar live show, praised for its cinematic scope and nostalgic warmth. Combining romantic imagery with stadium-sized production, Eyes on the Highway stands as one of the strongest tracks on Under the Radar Vol. 2.
Lyrics
And your story's been told
No one's unhappy and no one got old
And your heart doesn't break and it won't weigh a ton
And life is just a sitcom and that's not the atom bomb
You're a soul survivor and your soul survived
The first to understand it, the last one alive
And you know we live forever
Coz that's just how it goes
Till we all remember what everybody knows
Just keep your eyes on the highway
Just keep your eyes on the highway
Eyes on the highway
Just keep your eyes on the highway
You, me, heading down the road now
In front of seven billion souls now
Just keep your eyes on the highway
Just keep your eyes on the highway
I know something doesn't feel right
When you're blinded by the headlight
Just keep your eyes on the highway
Just keep your eyes on the highway
You would die for each other
And you probably will
For every lover a lover
If looks could kill
I would die in your arms
Coz that's the way to go
And I won't disappoint you
Coz you will never know
For every second that I wasted
Every secret that I've told
Every lie I've ever whispered
To everyone involved
I couldn't be more sorry
About how I got things done
I just wanna be john Travolta to Olivia Newton-John
You, me, heading down the road now
In front of seven billion souls now
Just keep your eyes on the highway
Just keep your eyes on the highway
I know something doesn't feel right
When you're blinded by the headlight
Just keep your eyes on the highway
Just keep your eyes on the highway
Just keep your eyes on the highway
Just keep your eyes on the highway
Eyes on the highway
Just keep your eyes on the highway
You, me, heading down the road now
In front of seven billion souls now
Just keep your eyes on the highway
Just keep your eyes on the highway
I know something doesn't feel right
When you're blinded by the headlight
Just keep your eyes on the highway
Just keep your eyes on the highway
Just keep your eyes on the highway
