About

Good People appears on Under the Radar Vol. 3 and was written by Robbie Williams and Stuart Price, with production by Price. The track samples the 1940 folk recording Another Man Done Gone by Vera Hall, collected by ethnomusicologists Alan and John Lomax, Ruby Pickens Tartt and Vera Hall herself. The haunting refrain “I didn’t know his name, he had a long chain on” forms the song’s rhythmic spine, connecting its modern electronic production to the raw emotion of traditional blues and gospel.

Williams described Good People as a “melodrama of a relationship in your twenties,” evoking the sound and mood of 1980s R&B. Influenced by artists such as Alexander O’Neal and Luther Vandross, the song portrays the emotional turbulence of love and loss, set against a hypnotic, looping groove. The track’s slow tempo and layered harmonies draw the listener into a trance-like state, which Williams admitted was intentional. “I find myself completely in a trance when that song’s finished,” he said. “It’s magic.”

Musically, the song is built around Price’s minimalist, soulful arrangement, with Williams’ falsetto adding vulnerability to its confessional tone. The interplay of the sample and contemporary instrumentation bridges eras and genres, fusing vintage Americana with electronic sophistication. Its lyrics evoke heartbreak and reconciliation, wrapped in a smooth, melancholy soundscape.

“It’s me attempting one of those songs where you’ve done wrong, she’s done wrong, and you just want to work it out. It’s the melodrama of a relationship in your twenties.”Robbie Williams

A lyric video created by Mark Ledyard accompanied the release, featuring a lone dancer performing under club lights as the record spins on a turntable. Fans praised Good People for its atmospheric production and emotional pull, though its subdued pace made it one of the album’s more contemplative pieces. The song highlights Williams’ ability to merge vintage influences with modern introspection, offering a soulful pause amid the album’s high-energy tracks.

Lyrics

I didn't know his name
I didn't know his name
I didn't know his name
I didn't know his name
I didn't know his name

He had a long chain on
He had a long chain on
He had a long chain on
He had a long chain on
He had a long chain on

Here comes the sunrise
In bed with red eyes
She left a 4 letter warning
At 4 in the morning

Already the day's gone
Bye bye baby so long
She left a 4 letter warning
At 4 in the morning

And I don't rock right no more
And you need to act right be right calm down
Baby come on
Baby come on
Come on
We're all good people, all good people
Come on
Baby come on
Baby come on
We're all good people, all good people

She holds the power
I, I am nothing
When I said I was leaving
She could tell I was bluffing

And I don't rock right no more
And you need to act right be right calm down
Baby come on
Baby come on
Come on
We're all good people, all good people
Come on
Baby come on
Come on
We're all good people, all good people

I didn't know his name
I didn't know his name
I didn't know his name
I didn't know his name
I didn't know his name

We're all good people
Come on
Come on
Baby come on
We're all good people, all good people
Come on
Baby come on
Come on
We're all good people, all good people, people, people, people, people, people, people
