About

Home Thoughts From Abroad was written by Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers for the 2020 British film Military Wives. The song was recorded by the Military Wives Choirs and conducted by Hilary Davan Wetton, accompanied by the film’s cast and orchestra. It appeared over the closing scenes of the film, which premiered on 6 March 2020 and was later released on demand after the COVID-19 lockdown disrupted its cinema run.

The film starred Kristin Scott Thomas, Sharon Horgan and Jason Flemyng, telling the true story of the women who founded the first Military Wives Choir while their partners were deployed overseas. Williams and Chambers’s composition reflected the themes of distance, resilience and emotional connection at the heart of the story, with warm choral harmonies and orchestral backing arranged by John Hayward, Lorne Balfe and Sean Hargreaves.

The lyrics express solidarity and hope across separation. “If I know if it’s shining on me, then it shines on you” and “What goes unsaid is what I’m feeling too” are examples of the song’s tender simplicity. The choir’s layered voices, supported by strings and piano, evoke both strength and vulnerability, capturing the mixture of pride and longing faced by the women it portrays.

It’s always a joy to work together on new music and we’re thrilled that our new song will be featured in this special film. We’re really proud of the track and can’t wait for you all to hear it.Williams and Chambers

Critics praised the composition for its sincerity and cinematic grace, noting how naturally it complemented the film’s emotional tone. Home Thoughts From Abroad later appeared in Williams’s XXV collection in 2022, featuring his own lead vocal, but the choral original remains the definitive version associated with the film.

Lyrics

Time drags its feet
It feels like forever
But the longer the wait
The sweeter the kiss

All I really know
Is we're stronger together
If that isn't love
Then I don't know what is

I know you can't say
How you're really feeling
What goes unsaid
Is what I'm feeling too

So here we are living
Letter to letter
There's nothing I love more
Than home thoughts from aboard

At 10 o'clock tonight
I'll be looking at the moon
That's 1:30 for you
Will you be up then too?

I know it's shining on me
And it shines on you
And these simple things
Help me get through

I stand in this storm
Just me and my sail
And hope that it blows me
Closer to you

Secrets keep you sick
They stop you from sleeping
I want you to know
I keep no secrets from you

So here we are living
Life through a letter
I know there's nothing you love more
Than home thoughts from abroad

At 10 o'clock tonight
I'll be looking at the moon
That's 1:30 for you
Will you be up then too

I know if it's shining on me
Then it shines on you
These simple things
Help me get through
