About
Written by Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers, Not of This Earth was released in April 2001 on the soundtrack to Bridget Jones’s Diary. The song accompanied the romantic comedy’s closing scenes and quickly became a favourite among fans, even though it never appeared on a Williams studio album. With its lush strings, brushed drums and tender vocal delivery, the track distils the cinematic warmth that defined much of his work with Chambers.
Williams wrote the song as a celebration of devotion and gratitude, pairing romantic imagery with a restrained arrangement that allowed his vocal to shine. “She’s not of this earth and I no longer need to search,” he sings, before concluding with the touching promise, “If I ever leave this world, you will have a song to sing so you know what you’re worth.” The tone is serene rather than sentimental, suggesting a mature, reflective view of love.
It’s one of the most beautiful things Guy and I ever did. We wanted it to sound timeless, like it had always been there.Robbie Williams
The recording features delicate orchestration reminiscent of 1960s film themes, bridging the gap between pop ballad and classic soundtrack composition. Its placement alongside Williams’ swing-era material hinted at his growing fascination with traditional songwriting.
Not of This Earth went largely unpromoted but has endured as a hidden gem of his catalogue, often cited by fans as a perfect wedding or first-dance song. Its understated grace and heartfelt lyricism show Williams at his most sincere — quietly romantic, self-assured and completely in tune with Chambers’ melodic touch.
Lyrics
you've changed places with the Sun
I know that you're the one
I love what we've become
Not of this earth
I wear you like a shroud
I know I make you proud
You done your crying now
She is not of this earth
And I no longer need to search
If I ever leave this World
You will have a song to sing
So you know what you were
Not of this Earth
She keep walking down my lane
I've learned to laugh again
Like a muff to a flame
Not of this Earth
Not surprised we're unashamed
she's gonna have to change your name
They will know that we're the same
She is not of this Earth
And I believed we've seen the worst
If I ever leave this world
You will have a song to sing
So you know what you were
Not of this Earth
Better get used to the smile
Not of this Earth
Gonna be around for awhile
Not of this Earth
Spent too much time being cursed
Not of this Earth
Not of this Earth
You changed places with the Sun
I know that you're the one
I love what we've become
Not of this earth
I wear you like a shroud
I know I made you proud
I know I made you proud
You done your crying now
Not of this Earth
