About

On My Own was released in December 2012 as part of the Different EP, the principal B-side collection from Take the Crown. Written by Robbie Williams with Kelvin Andrews and Danny Spencer of Soul Mekanik, the track features guest vocals by Sir Tom Jones. It was produced by Soul Mekanik, the Stoke-on-Trent duo who also contributed to Rudebox and Reality Killed the Video Star.

The song’s loose, funk-driven structure and playful instrumentation reveal its origins as a demo recording. Mixing brass hooks, deep bass and spoken-style verses, it channels a retro-soul energy with a mischievous edge. Jones’s powerful baritone contrasts with Williams’s lighter phrasing, and the pair exchange lines and laughs throughout the track, their camaraderie audible in the final mix. Sound effects, comic interjections and a buoyant rhythm section add to its light-hearted tone.

“I write so many songs and love all of them, but they can’t all make it onto an album. Some of my favourites never get heard. Check out the legend that is Tom Jones on On My Own.”Robbie Williams

The recording marked the two artists’ first studio collaboration since their joint performance at the 1998 Brit Awards, and it reflected Williams’s affection for classic showmanship and British pop heritage. Though a rough cut rather than a refined single, On My Own stands out among Williams’s later B-sides for its exuberance and sense of humour. The combination of two generations of performers, each known for charisma and vocal character, makes it a memorable and unconventional highlight of the Take the Crown era.

Lyrics

Your Dad just called and said you gotta go home Robbie Williams
Can't a man get a girl of his own Robbie Williams
And something hit me when I got off the phone Robbie Williams
It went Robbie Williams

You got something you wanna say then just say it Tom Jones
I can have 'em and I hate them all Robbie Williams
You know I love this life and I'm toying Tom Jones
See my collar, I can collar myself Robbie Williams
If you don't love this record don't play it Tom Jones
I can have 'em and I hate them all Robbie Williams
I think I like it more, can I Tom Jones
Throw a signal to the back of the dome Robbie Williams
Can't a man get a girl of his own Robbie Williams

On my own
I'm on my own again Tom Jones
Waiting for a friend to show
Just waiting for a friend to show Tom Jones
Just about ready to go
Just about ready to go Tom Jones
On my own
On my own Tom Jones

Why'd you have to go and sit where I'm sat Robbie Williams
I'm in the kitchen and I'm chasing a rat Robbie Williams
Cause everytime I go and worry the cat Robbie Williams
It goes Robbie Williams

They think I like myself can I say it Tom Jones
I can have 'em and I hate them all Robbie Williams
I say I love myself but I'm toying Tom Jones
See my collar, I can collar myself Robbie Williams
Just like that night we had them are psychic Tom Jones
I can have 'em and I hate them all Robbie Williams
I had to walk you home cause you Tom Jones
I wasn't checking with the checking myself Robbie Williams
So what you're saying isn't bad for my health Robbie Williams

On my own
On my own Tom Jones
Waiting for a friend to show
Just waiting for a friend to show Tom Jones
Just about ready to go
Just about ready to go Tom Jones
On my own
On my own Tom Jones

Ain't nobody should be living alone Robbie Williams
I believe there's nothing left to its own Robbie Williams
And every doggy should be given a bone Robbie Williams
To go Robbie Williams

This city loves itself but I'm saying
I can have 'em and I hate them all Robbie Williams
I think I'd like it more if I'm walking with you
See my collar, I can collar myself Robbie Williams
If you could live my life would you take it
I can have 'em and I hate them all Robbie Williams
Then maybe we got time for some
Cup of sugar and a bottle of bass Robbie Williams
Can't a man get a drink in a glass Robbie Williams

On my own
On my own Tom Jones
Waiting for a friend to show
Just waiting for a friend to show Tom Jones
Just about ready to go
I'm just about ready to go Tom Jones
On my own
I'm on my own again Tom Jones

On my own
On my own Tom Jones
Waiting for a friend to show
Just waiting for a friend to show Tom Jones
Just about ready to go
I'm just about ready to go Tom Jones
On my own
I'm on my own again Tom Jones
