About

Speaking Tongues appears on Under the Radar Vol. 2 and was written by Robbie Williams, Johnny McDaid of Snow Patrol and Scottish producer Show N Prove (Ellis Taylor), who also produced the track. The song revisits Williams’ chaotic youth in the mid-1990s, telling a surreal and often darkly comic story of his experiences in Ibiza while still a member of Take That. It fuses dance beats, rock swagger and rapid-fire lyrics into one of the album’s most unconventional moments.

The narrative, partly detailed in Williams’ autobiography Reveal, describes a brief, hedonistic trip involving drugs, danger and a supposed encounter with a reformed gangster who claimed to speak in tongues. Williams recalled, “I was in a swimming pool and had been up for a couple of days when a man told me Jesus had sent him to talk to me. I thought God had sent him.” The resulting breakdown became the basis of the song’s imagery, where spirituality and excess collide.

Musically, Speaking Tongues mirrors the confusion and mania of the story through its choppy electronic rhythm and distorted vocals. Lines such as “Everybody’s saying take that, take that, and I’m the cheeky fucker at the back” and “Before a disco biscuit, disco nap” blend humour and absurdity, offering a self-aware snapshot of fame and excess. The tone balances madness with insight, capturing the tension between rebellion and self-destruction.

“It’s about those few days in Ibiza when I completely lost it. A lot of people wanted to beat me up through the years. This one’s about that chaos.”Robbie Williams

Critics and fans have highlighted Speaking Tongues as one of the most eccentric and vivid tracks on Under the Radar Vol. 2. Its restless energy and manic storytelling reveal Williams’ knack for turning turbulent memories into inventive, darkly funny pop. The song stands as a reminder of his survival instinct and his ability to find art in the extremes of experience.

Lyrics

I'll tell you all a story 'bout a man who isn't here
Who had a pocket full of chemicals, some cigarettes and beer
I went out to Ibiza runnin' from the pourin' rain
I drank a poco loco and I'd never be the same
I met up with some boys they called themselves the diamond dogs
They were either on the dancefloor or dealing in the bogs
And a reformed gangster got me and he said that he found God
He looked me in the eyes and he started speaking tongues

Speaking tongues, speaking tongues
Everybody on the island speaking tongues

Speaking tongues, speaking tongues
Everybody on the island speaking tongues

Everybody's sayin' take that, take that
And I'm about to do exactly that-ah
And I'm the cheeky fucker at the back-ah
Before a disco biscuit disco-nap

In Balearic sunshine I went out for a swim
But I heard they'd sent a posse to the rocks to do me in
But I met some friends with faces who were pretty mighty men
They told me if they come for you my brother
We will go for them

I whistled down a taxi just to save us all some grief
The taxi man had weed and pills he'd bought from the police
He'd seen me on the TV said he didn't like my songs
It's the only sense he made coz then he started speaking tongues

Speaking tongues, speaking tongues
Everybody on the island speaking tongues

Speaking tongues, speaking tongues
Everybody on the island speaking tongues

Ahhh, Ahhh
Ahhh, Ahhh

Everybody's sayin' take that, take that
And I'm about to do exactly that-ah
And I'm the cheeky fucker at the back-ah
Before a disco biscuit disco-nap

I met a girl from Preston who wanted sex right there and then
She lead me to a hotel but they wouldn't let me in
I begged and I pleaded with the man who owned the place
Eventually he'd had enough and punched me in the face
I made a promise to that gangster
That I would not commit to another night on the white I‘d have to deal with it
But I had a poco loco mescaline comin' on strong
I really couldn't help it man I started speaking tongues

Speaking tongues, speaking tongues
Everybody on the island speaking tongues

Speaking tongues, speaking tongues
Everybody on the island speaking tongues

Speaking tongues, speaking tongues
Everybody on the island speaking tongues

Speaking tongues, speaking tongues
Everybody on the island speaking tongues

Everybody's sayin' take that, take that
And I'm about to do exactly that-ah
And I'm the cheeky fucker at the back-ah
Before a disco biscuit disco-nap

Everybody's sayin' take that take, that-ah
And I'm about to do exactly that-ah
And I'm the cheeky fucker at the back-ah
Before a disco biscuit disco-nap
