About
Surrender is the sixth track on Under the Radar Vol. 1, written by Robbie Williams with Tim Metcalfe and Flynn Francis and produced by the same duo. The song originated during sessions for Take the Crown in 2012 and was, according to Williams, once considered for release as the lead single. After several rewrites and contributions from outside writers, it remained unreleased until it found a place on this compilation.
The track opens with soft piano and atmospheric synth textures that build into a soaring pop chorus, a hallmark of Williams’ collaborations with Metcalfe and Francis. Its message of perseverance contrasts with its title: while early versions contained the refrain “lay down and surrender,” Williams later reworked it into a declaration of defiance, “don’t you ever surrender.” The change transformed the song from one of resignation into an anthem of strength and endurance.
Williams revealed that he had initially sent the piece to R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe and to Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy, both of whom attempted alternative lyrics. Ultimately, he returned to his own words, finding renewed meaning in the tension between letting go and fighting on.
“It was always, oh, at least we’ve got ‘Surrender’. I thought it was going to be the first single. Then I changed the lyric from ‘lay down and surrender’ to ‘don’t surrender’ and it became an anthem for never giving up.”Robbie Williams
Surrender embodies the emotional heart of Under the Radar Vol. 1, a blend of resilience, hope and vulnerability that captures Williams’ ongoing dialogue with himself and his audience.
Lyrics
I let the light destroy the lies
Till there's no bitterness inside
Then I be kind but I won't be cheap
There is no limit here for me
I'm taking everything I need
The world's alive
But it's run by fiends
Trying to take your soul
Before you leave
And it can break you down
If you don't break through
Take back control
When you feel like hope is gone
And there's no need to soldier on
No surrender
Don't you surrender, my love
I bit the world, the world bit back
This shout of love is not an act
And I care less if you don't understand
So when they'll sing a symphony
It will be written just for me
The most joyest melody
Seek the joy
Avoid the pain
Wake up
And do it again
This is your home
This is your life
Take back control
When you feel like hope is gone
And there's no need to soldier on
No surrender
Now don't you surrender, my love
Cos you're not here for very long
So when you leave go with a song
No surrender
Let it be no surrender, my love
Treat me like a king
Kiss me like a stranger
Treat me like a king
Kiss me like a stranger
Treat me like a king
Kiss me like a stranger
Treat me like a king
Kiss me like a stranger
When you feel like hope is gone
And there's no need to soldier on
No surrender
Don't you surrender, my love
I bit the world, the world bit back
This shout of love is not an act
And I care less if you don't understand
No surrender
Let it be no surrender, my love
Treat me like a king
Kiss me like a stranger
Treat me like a king
Kiss me like a stranger
