About

The National Anthem of Robbie appears on Under the Radar Vol. 3 and was written by Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers, produced by Chambers and Richard Flack. The song was first performed as the opening prelude to Williams’ Heavy Entertainment Show Tour in 2017, where it played before his entrance on stage. Set to the melody of Edward Elgar’s patriotic march Land of Hope and Glory, the song reimagines it as a humorous self-parody and mock hymn to the entertainer himself.

Williams explained that the idea began when Chambers returned from a cycling trip through Eastern Europe with a notebook of lyrical ideas, including the phrase “God Save Our Robbie.” Amused by the audacity of the concept, the pair developed it into a full orchestral piece sung by the Crouch End Festival Chorus. “It’s pompous, silly and exactly right,” Williams said. “It’s the perfect way to start a show — I’m laughing at myself before anyone else can.”

The lyrics playfully elevate Williams to regal status while acknowledging the absurdity of fame: “He’s loved by millions, he is so well hung, and when it’s all considered, he still rules the throne.” During live performances, the anthem segued into the show’s title track, as Williams descended from above the stage in full showman mode. The song became an emblem of his blend of irony, theatricality and British humour.

“Guy came back from his bike ride and said, ‘I’ve written this mad thing called God Save Our Robbie.’ I thought it was hilarious, pompous and whimsical in exactly the right amounts.”Robbie Williams

Though not a single, The National Anthem of Robbie quickly became a fan favourite for its mixture of grandeur and cheek. Its self-mocking tone captures the essence of Williams’ live persona, balancing confidence and comedy while celebrating the spectacle of pop performance.

Lyrics

God bless our Robbie
He's king of song
He can swing like a bastard
And can rock all night long

Yes he went to rehab
Drugs and drink took him low
But he would still make Rudebox
And gave rap a go

But when all is considered
He still rules the throne
God bless our Robbie
He can swing both ways

He is totally global
Except in the U S of A
One day he will be knighted
And his work will be done

He'll stand proud and fearless
His face forever young
God bless our Robbie
He is so well hung
