About

Originally written by Stephen Duffy for his 1998 album I Love My Friends, The Postcard was later covered by Robbie Williams as a B-side to Misunderstood. Williams recorded his version in 2004 during the Greatest Hits sessions, giving new life to one of Duffy’s most tender and tragic songs. Performed with little more than acoustic guitar, it is a reflection on loss, nostalgia and the enduring ache of memory.

Duffy wrote the song after finding an old photograph of himself and a girlfriend who had since died. Williams’ version keeps the intimacy of the original while adding his own warmth and emotional weight. Lines such as “Whilst you were away, I took Debbie to The Crown” and “I didn’t write your songs when we were going out, so why should I start now you’re not about” reveal the mix of affection and guilt that runs through the lyric.

I just loved that song from the first time I heard it. It’s beautiful and painful at the same time, and I wanted to sing it like I was talking to someone I’d lost.Robbie Williams

Williams’ stripped-down interpretation highlights the strength of the writing and the sincerity of his delivery. The result is one of the most affecting recordings of his career, a quiet and heartfelt tribute that shows deep respect for his new collaborator. The Postcard remains a poignant reminder of both artists’ ability to turn personal grief into timeless songwriting.

Lyrics

I don't remember receiving your postcard
I never got much post so it shouldn't have been too hard
You were on holiday with your school in some French town
And while you were away I took Debbie to The Crown

I feel as though the past is closing in on me
I found a photograph of me and Kimberly

I found your postcard and I put it on the wall
I found your picture you know tears were bound to fall
I didn't write you songs when we were going out
So why should I start now you are not about

I feel as though the past is closing in on me
I found a photograph of me and Kimberly

We hardly used to even drink we didn't smoke
We'd walk home from the pub 'cause we were always broke
So when your mother called and said that you were dead
I thought she's talking of another Kim instead

I feel as though the past is closing in on me
I found a photograph of me and Kimberly

She said it seemed you accidentally overdosed
It was so long since I talked to her and once we were so close
And I am left with all these things I didn't say
And a picture of you in my arms the day you went away

I feel as though the past is closing in on me
I found a photograph of me and Kimberly

I feel as though the past is closing in on me
I found a photograph of me and Kimberly
