About

The Promise was released in December 2012 as part of the Different EP, the main collection of B-sides from Take the Crown. Written by Robbie Williams with songwriter Paul Freeman and produced by Jacknife Lee, it was described by Williams as his “Christmas song” at the time of release. The track combines gentle acoustic guitar, piano and strings to create a reflective, melancholy atmosphere.

Williams explained that The Promise explores the fragile nature of human vows and the inevitability of change. The opening line, “There’ll be no Christmas anymore, no tiny footsteps at our door,” sets the tone for a song that reflects on loss, separation and broken commitments. Despite its emotional weight, the melody remains tender and melodic, showcasing one of Williams’s most understated vocal performances of the period.

Although released during the holiday season, The Promise was not included on his later festive album The Christmas Present. Its lyrical ambiguity—whether about the end of a relationship or the grief of losing someone—gives it a timeless quality, transcending its seasonal context. Fans have praised its simplicity and sincerity, comparing it to the confessional ballads of his early work.

“It’s about the promises that we all make but can’t always keep. It’s sad, but it’s honest, and sometimes that’s the only gift you can give.”Robbie Williams

The Promise remains one of the most affecting of Williams’s post-album tracks, its delicate arrangement and poignant lyrics capturing his ability to balance melancholy with warmth. Its tone of quiet acceptance fits naturally within the introspective undercurrent of the Take the Crown era.

Lyrics

1, 2, 3, 4

Carry my coffin in the rain
Leave the reeds in the dirt with my name
Everything's unwinding
And I can't wind it back

There'll be no Christmas anymore
No tiny footsteps at our door
I hope their memories don't fade
Just like the promise we made

Let the rings fall from our fingers
As if they were never worn
The presence of love will
In the empty clothes on the floor
And I know you were a friend to me
But I lose myself in company

There'll be no Christmas anymore
No tiny footsteps at our door
I hope their memories don't fade
Just like the promise we made

But Lord knows that I was wrong
Cause the guilt follows me around
One day you'll be glad I'm gone
'cause I'm over now

There'll be no Christmas anymore
No tiny footsteps at our door
And nothing left of us remains
Just like the promise we made
