About

Originally written and recorded by Bobby Darin in 1962, Things became a transatlantic hit, reaching number two in the UK and number three in the US. Nearly four decades later, Robbie Williams revived the song for Swing When You’re Winning as a playful duet with actress Jane Horrocks, best known for her role as Bubble in Absolutely Fabulous. The collaboration brought together Horrocks’ comic timing and Williams’ relaxed charisma, transforming Darin’s nostalgic pop standard into a charmingly theatrical exchange.

Recorded in London in under two hours, the pair’s chemistry was immediate. Their voices intertwine over a light, shuffling rhythm section and warm brass, evoking a couple reminiscing fondly about past love. Between takes, the two improvised banter that was left on the final mix, giving the recording a spontaneous feel that matched its 1960s innocence.

Jane’s got such brilliant comic timing. It was dead easy. She made the song come alive for me.Robbie Williams

At the Royal Albert Hall concert, Williams and Horrocks re-created the duet’s flirtatious dialogue, blending humour and warmth. The exchange at the song’s close — Horrocks teasing that he wanted her to sound like Kylie, Williams insisting he meant June Whitfield — became one of the show’s funniest moments. Things stands as a highlight of Swing When You’re Winning, a perfect marriage of nostalgia, personality and pure entertainment.

Lyrics

Every night I sit here by my window Robbie Williams
Window Jane Horrocks
Staring at the lonely avenue Robbie Williams
Avenue Jane Horrocks
Watching lovers holding' hands 'n laughing' Robbie Williams
Ha-Ha-Ha Jane Horrocks
Thinking about the things we used to do Robbie Williams

Thinking about things Jane Horrocks
Like a walk in the park Robbie Williams
Things Jane Horrocks
Like a kiss in the dark Robbie Williams
Things Jane Horrocks
Like a sailboat ride Robbie Williams
Yeah yeah Jane Horrocks
What about the night we cried Robbie Williams

Things like a lovers vow Robbie Williams
Things that we don't do now Robbie Williams
Thinking about the things we used to do Robbie Williams

Memories are all I have to cling to Robbie Williams
Cling to Jane Horrocks
And heartaches are the friends I'm talking to Robbie Williams
But you got me now Jane Horrocks
When I'm not thinking of-a just how much I love you Robbie Williams
I love you too Jane Horrocks
I'm thinking about the things we used to do Robbie Williams
We used to do Jane Horrocks

Thinking about things Jane Horrocks
Like a walk in the park Robbie Williams
Things Jane Horrocks
Like a kiss in the dark Robbie Williams
Things Jane Horrocks
Like a sailboat ride Robbie Williams
Yeah-yeah Jane Horrocks
What about the night we cried Robbie Williams

Things like a lovers vow Both
Things that we don't do now Both
Thinking about the things we used to do Both

Still can hear the jukebox softly playin' Robbie Williams
Playing Jane Horrocks
And the face I see each day belongs to you Robbie Williams
Belongs to you Jane Horrocks
There's not a single sound then there's nobody else around Robbie Williams
Ooohhh Jane Horrocks
It's a-just me thinking of the things we used to do Robbie Williams

Thinking about things Jane Horrocks
Like a walk in the park Robbie Williams
Lots of things Jane Horrocks
Like a kiss in the dark Robbie Williams
Yeah things Jane Horrocks
Like a sailboat ride Robbie Williams
Wow wow Jane Horrocks
What about the night we cried Robbie Williams

Things like a lovers vow Both
Things that we don't do now Both
Thinking about the things we used to do Both
And heartaches are the friends I'm talking to Both
You got me thinking about the things we used to do Both
I hope so Jane Horrocks
Thinking about the things we used to do Both

[Spoken:] You are all shit now Jane Horrocks
No start that on me on this album Robbie Williams
Right then, why are you doing it like that at that time Jane Horrocks
Well from start to finish then you're saying that I'm wrong Robbie Williams
You said, you said I had to think about Kylie when I was doing this and I was Jane Horrocks
You obviously weren't thinking about Kylie, were you thinking about Jean Whitfield Robbie Williams
I can't hear you now, I can't hear you Jane Horrocks
Well, you were thinking about Jean Whitfield, that who's you thinking about Robbie Williams
I had to think about somebody and you told me Kylie Jane Horrocks
Well listen, you just came in wrong and then it got progressively worse from there Robbie Williams
What?!?! Jane Horrocks
You started wrong and then it just went worse Robbie Williams
Can't hear you, 'cos knows Jane Horrocks
It went bad, bad, bad right towards Robbie Williams
Who said bad? When you sang Jane Horrocks
No when you sang Robbie Williams
No Jane Horrocks

I don't want to do anything to do with it, I'm going goodbye Robbie Williams
