About

Written by Ian Dury and his long-time collaborator Chaz Jankel, You’re the Why was one of the final songs Dury completed before his death in 2000. Dury, the frontman of Ian Dury and the Blockheads, was one of Britain’s most distinctive songwriters — known for his sharp wit, wordplay and street-level storytelling in hits such as Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick and Reasons to Be Cheerful, Part 3. You’re the Why, however, reveals his gentler side: a tender love song far removed from the bawdy humour of his earlier work.

After Dury’s death, the track was recorded by Robbie Williams with The Blockheads for the posthumous album Ten More Turnips from the Tip (2002). Williams had befriended Dury during a 1998 UNICEF mission to Sri Lanka, and after hearing You’re the Why performed at Dury’s funeral, he volunteered to sing it himself. His performance combines reverence and vulnerability, the warmth of his vocal matching the understated groove created by The Blockheads.

I told the band at Ian’s funeral, “That’s a beautiful song. If you ever want someone to sing it, I’m your man.” I meant it from the heart.Robbie Williams

Williams’ version retains the soulful phrasing of Dury’s writing, particularly in lines such as “I need you till the birds forget to fly” and “Wherever there’s a wherefore, you’re the why.” The result is an understated, heartfelt tribute from one British storyteller to another. In recording it, Williams not only honoured Dury’s final lyric but also his lasting influence on British pop’s mix of humour, honesty and humanity.

Lyrics

I shuffled through the modes of bad behaviour
And hankered for the desolated dawn
I couldn't cope with yet another saviour
To steer me from the way that I was born

Then like a ton of bricks the dawn descended
Recalcitrance was hurtled to the floor
The citadel lay breached and undefended
You brought a love I'd never known before

I'll want you till the seasons lose their mystery
I'll need you till the birds forget to fly
I'll love you more than anyone in history
Wherever there's a wherefore you're the why

Then like a ton of bricks the dawn descended
Recalcitrance was hurtled to the floor
The citadel lay breached and undefended
You brought a love I'd never known before

I'll want you till the seasons lose their mystery
I'll need you till the birds forget to fly
I'll love you more than anyone in history
Wherever there's a wherefore you're the why

I'll want you till the seasons lose their mystery
I'll need you till the birds forget to fly
I'll love you more than anyone in history
Wherever there's a wherefore you're the why

I'll want you till the seasons lose their mystery
I'll need you till the birds forget to fly
I'll love you more than anyone in history
Wherever there's a wherefore you're the why

I'll want you till the seasons lose their mystery
I'll need you till the birds forget to fly
I'll love you more than anyone in history
Wherever there's a wherefore you're the why
