Swing When You’re Winning was released in November 2001 as Robbie Williams’ fourth studio album. A departure from his contemporary pop output, the record is devoted to swing standards and big band arrangements, reflecting Williams’ long stated admiration for the genre.
The album was recorded with producer Guy Chambers and features duets with artists including Nicole Kidman, Jane Horrocks and Jon Lovitz. Its lead single, Somethin’ Stupid, a duet with Kidman, reached number one on the UK Singles Chart.
Musically, Swing When You’re Winning draws on mid twentieth century American songbook material, with orchestral arrangements and brass led instrumentation. Williams’ interpretations balance reverence for the originals with his own vocal phrasing and stage persona.
I’ve always wanted to make a swing album.Robbie Williams
The album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and became one of the fastest selling albums of the year in the UK. Its success broadened Williams’ audience and established swing as a recurring strand in his catalogue.
