About
David’s Song appeared on Heavy Entertainment Show and was written by Robbie Williams, Guy Chambers, Kara DioGuardi and Jewel. It was produced by Chambers and Richard Flack. The song was originally titled Last Song Ever and written in 2015, but it took on new meaning in 2016 following the death of Williams’ long-time manager, David Enthoven. He renamed it in Enthoven’s memory shortly before the album’s release.
When Enthoven was diagnosed with terminal cancer, Williams was working on his album at home with his wife Ayda. As they discussed the project, he reflected on his relationship with Enthoven and decided to dedicate the song to him. Enthoven, who had managed Williams since 1996, had helped him rebuild his career after leaving Take That and was known for his kindness and calm influence. He died on 11 August 2016, aged 72.
Musically, the song is a slow, orchestral ballad featuring piano, strings and a soaring guitar solo. Williams’ vocal performance is intimate and restrained, conveying grief and gratitude in equal measure. The lyric speaks of mortality and companionship, balancing hope with loss: “I know I promised I wouldn’t leave here without you, please don’t let me go.”
“It’s a song about the realisation that life is fragile, and that love and friendship are the things that give it meaning.”Robbie Williams
David’s Song was praised for its sincerity and emotional depth, standing among Williams’ most personal recordings. Fans and critics noted that it echoed the reflective tone of earlier ballads such as Angels and Better Man, but with a more mature and contemplative perspective. It remains one of the most moving tributes in his catalogue, a testament to the mentor who guided his artistic path.
Lyrics
I'm not ashamed to say that I am frightened
Hold me now, I used to heal like lightning
Are yours the last eyes that I'll ever see, staring into me
Was I just because, a mistake in love
Two people who stopped trying, enough
Don't want a brand new life, this one's just right
Why would I throw it all away
Won't you hold me now, just before I stop breathing
I know I promised I wouldn't leave here without you
Please don't let me go while they play the last song ever
The last chance to hold each other, forever
Hold me now, I've still got words worth hearing
I just wanna be a human being
Hold me now, we all know what I'm fearing
I think I see the light, am I disappearing?
Was I just because, a mistake in love
Two people who stopped trying, enough
Don't want a brand new life, this one's just right
Why would I throw it all away
Won't you hold me now, just before I stop breathing
I know I promised I wouldn't leave here without you
Please don't let me go while they play the last song ever
The last chance to hold each other, forever
Won't you hold me now, just before I stop breathing
I know I promised I wouldn't leave here without you
Please don't let me go while they play the last song ever
The last chance to hold each other, forever
Hold me now, remember how we were at the beginning
