About
Written by Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers, Kids was released on 9 October 2000 as the second single from Sing When You’re Winning and also featured on Kylie Minogue’s album Light Years. It reached number two in the UK Singles Chart, held off the top by U2’s Beautiful Day, and became a Top 10 hit in Ireland and New Zealand. Certified silver in the UK, it sold more than 230,000 copies.
The collaboration began when Minogue asked Williams and Chambers to write for her comeback. They first offered Your Disco Needs You, then produced Kids, which Williams decided to keep as a duet. Mixing his swagger with Minogue’s dance-pop precision, the song became a playful anthem of confidence and flirtation. Its lyrics balance innuendo and humour, with Williams’ tongue-in-cheek rap declaring, “Born 1974, there’s only one Robbie Williams.”
I played it to Kylie and she liked it, so we sang it together there and then. It rocks live. It’s as AC/DC as I’ll ever get.Robbie Williams
The video, directed by Simon Hilton, channels the style of 1950s Hollywood musicals, evoking Grease through mirrored sets and synchronized dancers. The pair perform on a moving walkway surrounded by glitter and lights, with visible chemistry that fuelled media attention. Williams later recalled being caught off guard during filming.
She dropped her negligee and I just pointed and laughed like an idiot. I think that spoiled it.Robbie Williams
Kids became a highlight of both artists’ live sets and has remained one of Williams’ defining duets. Its mix of self-mockery, pop glamour and rock energy captured the irreverent spirit of Sing When You’re Winning and solidified Williams’ status as Britain’s most charismatic male pop performer.
