About

Written by Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers, Let Love Be Your Energy was released as the fourth single from Sing When You’re Winning on 9 April 2001. The track reached number 10 in the UK Singles Chart and was later released in Australia in 2002, peaking at number 53.

The song’s upbeat production contrasts with its introspective lyrics about love as a force for positive change. Williams wrote most of the words himself, including the line “If you’re willing to change the world, let love be your energy,” which became a defining message of the era. Musically, the track is anchored by bright guitars and layered harmonies, with ambient effects such as a background voice mimicking a weather forecast.

The accompanying video, directed by Ed Bignell of Passion Pictures, was the first not to feature Williams in person. Instead, an animated version of the singer circles the globe in pursuit of love. Two edits were produced: one with explicit nudity and one for general broadcast. The visual style drew comparisons to Damon Albarn’s virtual band Gorillaz, whose animation team also worked on the clip.

I just couldn’t be bothered to do another video shoot, so we made it a cartoon instead.Robbie Williams

Although he later admitted frustration with the promotional grind, Let Love Be Your Energy stands as a warm and idealistic opening to Sing When You’re Winning, pairing optimism with the sharp humour that marked Williams’ writing at the turn of the millennium.

Lyrics

Out of a million seeds
Only the strongest one breathes
You made a miracle mother
I'll make a man out of me

Daddy where's the sun gone from the sky
What did we do wrong, why did it die
And all the grown ups say sorry kids we got no reply

If you're willing to change the world
Let love be your energy
I've got more than I need
When your love shines down on me

Every tear that you cry
Will be replaced when you die
Why don't you love your brother?
Are you out of your mind

Daddy where's the sun gone from the sky
What did we do wrong, why did it die
And if you've got no love for me then
I'll say goodbye

If you're willing to change the world
Let love be your energy
I've got more than I need
When your love shines down on me

If you're willing to change the world
Let love be your energy
I can't contain how I feel
When your love shines down on me

Well if you want it come and make a stance
So when it's in your hands
People show me love

Well if you want it come and make a stance
So when it's in your hands
People show me love

If you're willing to change the world
Let love be your energy
I got more than I need
When your love shines down on me

If you're willing to change the world
Let love be your energy
I can't contain how I feel
When your love shines down on me
