About

Written by Robbie Williams and guitarist Fil Eisler, Talk to Me appeared as a B-side to Rock DJ in July 2000. The track, rough-edged and emotionally charged, was one of the earliest songs completed for the Sing When You’re Winning sessions. Williams later said he was heavily intoxicated when he wrote it, describing it as a snapshot of disconnection and loneliness.

I was f***ing off my tits when I wrote this.Robbie Williams

The song’s tone mirrors that confession: verses drift in melancholy before surging into a rock chorus built on distorted guitars and layered harmonies. The lyric “Maybe you could talk to me and make my day” pleads for genuine connection rather than the fleeting intimacy of one-night encounters. It reflects the emotional fatigue that Williams frequently described during this period, caught between fame, self-indulgence and isolation.

Recorded with a minimal band arrangement and little studio polish, Talk to Me stands out for its rawness. Its reference to everyday details — “News at ten, EastEnders and a cup of tea” — grounds the song in a kind of post-party domestic despair. Though never performed live, it remains one of Williams’ most candid early B-sides, an unguarded look at a star craving conversation over chaos.

Lyrics

Close the door, turn out the light
There's something really wrong tonight with you
Me and you

You say you're too young to love
And too old to hate
Remote control keeps you awake
So turn me on

Maybe you could talk and make my day
You don't have to walk away to
Stay with me
Make me change
Answer me
Break the chain

News at Ten, Eastenders, and another cup of tea
And then I fight
Baby, not tonight

'Cause I'm not dressed to be a clown
I'm not in the mood for shouting out
Talk to me
Break the chain
Talk to me
Make me change

Do you keep your lover out of sight?
'Cause you smell like someone else tonight
All right all right

Talk to me
Break the chain
Talk to me
Make me change

Answer me
Answer me
Answer me
Answer me
