Reality Killed the Video Star was released in November 2009 as Robbie Williams’ eighth studio album. It marked his first studio album in three years and his only full collaboration with producer Trevor Horn, whose production style shaped the record’s polished, electronic sound.
Recorded in London, the album brought together Williams with a range of co writers and session musicians under Horn’s direction. The lead single, Bodies, introduced the project with a more expansive, synth driven arrangement than much of Williams’ earlier work.
Musically, Reality Killed the Video Star blends electronic textures, layered production and pop songwriting. The album title references The Buggles’ 1979 hit Video Killed the Radio Star, linking the project conceptually to Horn’s earlier career while reflecting on fame and media culture.
It’s a pop record with a big sound.Robbie Williams
The album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, becoming Williams’ seventh consecutive UK number one studio album. Its release marked a stylistic shift towards high gloss production while maintaining his established pop sensibility.
